Experiential Anatomy Extended Education for Professionals

Know with Body and Brain
Experiential Anatomy is a deep, internal study of the body which goes beyond intellectual and classical medical approaches.  Movement is explored through the direct experience of our own body systems, tissues and cells.  The learning process takes place not just in the mind, but in the body itself and the experience is integrated at the cellular level.

In its application to yoga, Experienrtial Anatomy opens a door to the transformative aspects of yoga and takes asanas beyond a formulaic, external approach and into the subtleties of yoga practice.  Initiating asanas in this conscious, embodied way allows you to freely execute each posture as an expression of your present internal state of being.  Your yoga experience is then shaped by the fullness of your cellular involvement rather than dictated by your ability to complete an external form.  Static positions transform into dynamic patterns of movement and you, as well as your practice, become enlivened.

The Slowmotion Somatics Program
Unlike academic classes that emphasize memorization of anatomical names and functions, Experiential Anatomy is a practical integrated approach to the anatomy of movement.  Through direct bodily experience and sensation, David leads you on a tour of your inner territories, using clear tools for research and exploration, including fun physical activities and games that simplify anatomical concepts.

By learning anatomy in this way you will…

  • develop a deeper mind-body consciousness
  • understand the “why” of asana and body movement, not just “what” techniques
  • feel more confident in your yoga practice
  • avoid injuries and support your body’s natural healing processes
  • make healthy lifestyle choices
  • be able to understand medical conditions better and communicate more effectively with doctors and healthcare professionals

As a teacher…

  • intuitively understand how to protect your students from injury
  • be able to design modifications for students with injuries and other special health conditions
  • be able to communicate clearly and work in tandem with other health care professionals
  • learn to apply yoga and movement therapeutically
  • heighten awareness & sensitivity to body language; be able to “read” bodies

The study of anatomy is vast and could be a lifetimes worth of study. The SMS programs, with this in mind, balances examination of important  details with a general introduction and overview of the body systems.  Most importantly we aim to equip students with skills that allow them to continue to expand their knowledge and learn independently.

The SMS program includes
• practical grounding in the essentials of the Anatomy, Physiology, and Kinesiology of yoga practice
• commonly used terms and vocabulary
• experience in the primary movement systems; the structural and muscular systems in relation to yoga asana
• anatomical deconstructing and analysis of yoga asana
• anatomy studies in the context of living bodies
• integration oriented studies, we study the bodys elements in both macro and micro perspectives and are careful to encompass the gestalt of our living body, and not just the body reduced to a collection of pieces and parts.
• building touch and communication skills
• emphasis on direct, experiential learning
• cultivating an inquisitive spirit
• understanding fundamentals of safety
• understanding the benefits of yoga from a anatomical/phsiological point of view
• how to teach fundamentals of yogic living through movement and touch
• application in each of the eight practical limbs of yoga with emphasis on asana and pranayama

In addition to these fundamentals we also touch on
• stress and its positive and negative manifestations
• the nature and function of pain and pleasure
• the larger community of body systems including the fluid system, the nervous system, the organ systems, and the endocrine system. Segments on circulation and breath integrate all the systems.

“Before studying with David I felt anatomy was difficult, esoteric, and inaccessible.  But David’s enthusiasm for the subject is infectious and his teaching style makes anatomy simple and palpable.  I was surprised to find that anatomy can be easy when approached in the right way.  More importantly I’ve found how fun and fascinating anatomy can be.”  -Yumi Yasuhara

“In yoga class we always hear about alignment. The teacher gives us a long list of things to do to get aligned. But until David’s course I never really understood what they really meant. In his program I learned to actually become aware of and sense my own alignment and how to figure out how to create that alignment for myself. It’s simple actually, but nobody ever took the time to actually empower me to do it myself.” -Yuri Matsura

Slowmotion Somatics offers several types of training programs:
“Plug-In” Modules for teacher training programs. This program can be tailored to your program. We offer specially designed programs for Teacher Training Programs that follow the 200- and 500- hour Yoga Alliance Standards. The program for 200-hour teacher trainings, our most popular course, has three main components. The first focuses on the anatomy and mechanics of breathing, the three diaphragms and the thoracic and abdominal muscles. The second component covers the evolution and anatomy of spinal mechanics, the development of postural support and articular freedom. The third main component deals with the articular anatomy of the limbs, pelvic and shoulder girdles and explores issues surrounding locomotion and arm support. The program for 500-hour programs expands on the fundamentals, and brings in material on the nervous system, organs, and fluid systems.

Continuing Education for those who are already yoga teachers. SMS offers a 50-hour training in Experiential Anatomy for Yoga Teachers and others seeking to expand personally and professionally.
